For the past several
years, investigators have
searched for clues to the
possible cause of a childhood
cancer cluster in Churchill
County, which includes
Fallon (top and opposite
page), but they have not come
up with any clear answers.
HINKLEY, CA
With help from Erin Brockovich,
the residents of Hinkley
successfully filed suit against
Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E)
over water contamination.
Brockovich next turned to
Kettleman Hills, Calif., where
Ruth Ann Vaughn (bottom right)
and other former residents
believe a PG&E facility caused
illnesses and deaths.
McFARLAND, CA
The site of an Army pilot
training field during
World War II, McFarland is
home to a childhood
cancer cluster that was
investigated in the late 1980s.
Residents were convinced
there was something in
the air, land or water
that was making the children
sick, but researchers were
unable to find a link.
